Celebrating Two Significant Anniversaries!

Please “Come Aboard” and join us as we celebrate
Hornet's 70 Years of Excellence as an Aircraft Carrier
and our 15 Years of Success as a Museum
serving the San Francisco Bay Area!

Day Time Festivities

Hornet Anniversary Living Ship Day

In addition to the usual Living Ship activities, the day will feature a large panel of
speakers representing Hornet’s past crews from all decades of service. We will
have a large variety of guests, ranging from Hornet WWII pilots to Apollo
Recovery historians, and a special ceremony to honor all of Hornet’s
brave crews. The ceremony and panel starts at 1:00pm in Hangar Bay 3.

The panel includes speakers who were instrumental in opening
the USS Hornet Museum, which is celebrating its 15th year of success this year.

There will also be an opening of a special anniversary exhibit, “Hornet:
Reflections through Time” and a “cash bar” BBQ featuring local breweries.
Regular Museum Admission applies for the daytime celebration.

Gala Special Guest: Apollo 12 Astronaut Dick Gordon

Captain Richard F. Gordon, Jr. Gordon was one of the third group of astronauts named by NASA in October 1963. Gordon served as backup pilot for the Gemini 8 flight. In September 1966, he made his first space flight as pilot of Gemini 11, alongside Pete Conrad who later commanded the Apollo 12 mission.

Gordon was subsequently assigned as backup command-module pilot for Apollo 9. In November 1969, he flew as command-module pilot of Apollo 12, the second manned mission to land on the Moon. While his crewmates, Pete Conrad and Alan Bean, landed in the Ocean of Storms, Gordon remained in lunar orbit aboard the command module, Yankee Clipper, making desired mapping photographs of tentative landing sites for future missions.

After Apollo 12, Gordon was assigned as backup commander of Apollo 15. He was slated to walk on the Moon as commander of Apollo 18, but that mission was cancelled because of budget cuts. Gordon completed two space flights, logging a total of 315 hours and 53 minutes in space, of which 2 hours and 41 minutes were spent in EVA.
