Specialty Tours

//Specialty Tours

The USS Hornet has helped build the history of the United States. Chart your group’s course to Alameda and visit the ship today! While the ship is open during the day for General Admission, the Museum offers several specialty tours to our guests.

Group Tours

Group Tours are for groups of 15 or more visiting during normal hours of operation. Visitors who make an advanced reservation for a Group Tour will receive a discount at admission but will otherwise get all the benefits of a daytime guest! Daytime visits are  mostly self-guided with docents stationed in the Hangar Bay and Flight Deck to answer questions. Following a brief safety orientation, visitors are free to explore the many passageways, compartments, and decks of this historic ship.

Group Tour Add-Ons

Enhance your group’s experience by selecting any of the following options on your reservation form:

  • Guided Tours
Many of our Docents are veterans of the USS Hornet or other aircraft carriers. Let them escort your group throughout the ship and share their personal stories. $30.00/hr per docent, minimum 2 hours (1 docent suggested for every 20 people)
  • Flight Simulator Rides
Experience the thrill of being launched from the Flight Deck of an aircraft carrier in an F/A-18 jet fighter on a desert strike assignment with our 15 seat Flight Simulator. Special group rate $4.50/person per ride with advance reservation
  • Lunch in the Officers’ Mess
Eat lunch in Hornet’s Officers’ Mess! With advance reservations, catered lunches are provided in an Officers’ Mess with a one-hour room reservation. Please refer to lunch order form for options and to place orders. Prices vary. Lunch orders must be submitted one week in advance of your visit and are non-refundable.

The basic tour is called “Tour at Sea” and the average time for this program is 2 hours. You may add a private docent to your tour and the rate for the docent is $60.00 per docent and the ratio is 1:25.

The ship opens at 10:00 am and shuts at 5 pm.  After your guided tour you are welcome to stay as late as you want.

Flashlight Tours

Explore the ship early in the morning to beat the crowds and receive a special tour of areas onboard the USS Hornet Museum that have not yet been opened to the public or have limited daytime access. This includes areas such as Combat Information Center (CIC), the Brig, and Message Center (Radio Central). Flashlights are required when going into these hidden spaces since we have dark rooms even during the daytime! Following the guided tour, which lasts for approximately 3 hours,  guests are invited to explore the rest of the museum on their own when the tour ends. Tour participants must be at least 13 years old.

Tour Tips

Our ladders are steep going between decks so for your safety we ask you not to bring aboard bags that exceed 12 x 8 x 12 inches. We recommend that all oversize bags remain in your vehicle, though lockers are available for rent at the Admissions Desk.

Arrive Early

Allow at least 2 to 3 hours for your visit—there is a lot to see aboard our Museum! We recommend arriving by 2:00 pm to sign up for docent tours that take you to areas such as the Engine Room and Captain’s Bridge. Please be aware that some spaces, such as our Engine Room, are more difficult to access and due to safety concerns those tours have size and height restrictions.

Maps & Audio

The ship is mostly self-guided. A tour map is available at the Admissions Desk. Audio tours are also available or additional purchase and contain hours of additional information from men who served aboard aircraft carriers!

Talk to the many volunteers throughout the Museum! Our docents have a wealth of information and our volunteer restoration crew are always

Be Comfortable

Wear comfortable, closed-toes walking shoes due to the ambulatory nature of the tour. Consider layers as some parts of the ship can be cold regardless of weather.

Adult Supervision

Children must be with an adult at all times as our ship is large with many compartments and passages.

Cameras are welcome but must have neck or wrist strap. Photography is allowed throughout the ship though the Museum does not allow professional equipment without advanced reservations through our Event Inquiry Form.

Flashlights are required for the Flashlight and History Mystery tours so make sure to bring a good one!
