The USS HORNET offers a unique environment to teach aviation, space, and communications concepts in an interesting, interactive, and fun manner. Each merit badge program features hands-on activities on the historic aircraft carrier.

We currently offer three different badge programs:

Aviation Merit Badge Program The USS Hornet Museum offers an exciting program that promotes an interest in aviation among young people.

Radio Merit Badge Program – With its technological advances at sea, the aircraft carrier USS HORNET is the perfect venue to introduce kids to the wonderful world of communication.

Space Exploration Merit Badge Program – What better place to earn your Space Exploration Merit badge than the aircraft carrier that recovered the first men to walk on the moon? USS HORNET uses classroom studies and artifacts to give hands-on experience.

Aviation Merit Badge Program

The USS Hornet Museum offers an exciting program that promotes an interest in aviation among young people.Our instructors, Randy and Jeff, are former Naval aviators that have developed an all-inclusive curriculum geared to teach scouts about aircraft and the principles of flight. The aircraft carrier USS HORNET, with its rich naval aviation heritage, is the perfect venue to introduce kids to the wonderful world of flight.

Classroom Activities:

The USS Hornet Museum’s Aviation Merit Badge Program is designed to meet all the requirements of the Boys Scouts of America Aviation Merit Badge curriculum. Five hours of classroom lessons and activities include the following components:

  • Types of Aircraft and Their Uses
  • Forces of Flight
  • Aircraft Engines and Propeller
  • Aircraft Control Surfaces
  • Aircraft Instruments
  • Careers in Aviation
  • Aircraft Preflight Inspection
  • Aeronautical Charts

Requirements:

1. Participants must be signed up for the Live-Aboard Program

2. Participants must be at least 12 years old.

3. Participants must read the Aviation Merit Badge pamphlet before attending class. The merit badge pamphlet can be purchased from your local council.

4. Participants are encouraged to download the Aviation Merit Badge Worksheet to begin work on their own before class.

5. Participants must sign up for the class in advance by calling the Live-Aboard Office at (510) 521-8448 x 280. Due to the popularity of the program, we cannot guarantee that space will be available. Class size is limited to 30 participants, on a first-reserved basis.

6. A $15.00 fee will be collected in advance to cover administrative costs of the program.

7. All participants should plan to arrive and check in at 9:30am and remember to bring your Blue Cards!

Radio Merit Badge Program

With its technological advances at sea, the aircraft carrier USS HORNET is the perfect venue to introduce kids to the wonderful world of communication. Members of USS Hornet Amateur Radio Club NB6GC have developed an all-inclusive curriculum geared to teach scouts about Radio Communication and the principles of Ham Radio.

Classroom Activities:

The USS Hornet Museum’s Radio Merit Badge Program is designed to meet all the requirements of the Boys Scouts of America Radio Merit Badge curriculum. Classroom lessons and activities include the following components:

  • Principles and Uses of Radio
  • Electronic Components and Safety
  • Purposes and Practices of Amateur Radio
  • Hands-on Demonstration of Amateur Radio

Requirements:

1. Participants must be signed up for the Live-Aboard Program.

2. Participants must be at least 11 years old.

3. Participants must read the Radio Merit Badge pamphlet before attending class. The merit badge pamphlet can be purchased from your local council.

4. Participants are encouraged to download the Radio Merit Badge Worksheet to begin work on their own before class.

Space Exploration Merit Badge Program

Earning National Historic Landmark status due in large part to her essential role in recovering the Apollo 11 and 12 astronauts, the USS Hornet is a perfect platform to introduce and develop concepts of Space Exploration.

Classroom Activities:

The USS Hornet Museum’s Space Exploration Merit Badge Program is designed to meet all the requirements of the Boys Scouts of America Space Exploration Merit Badge curriculum except actual model rocket firing. Classroom lessons and activities include the following components:

  • A brief history of Space Exploration
  • Principles of Rocketry and Space Travel
  • Hands-on design and construction of a Mars Habitat mock-up

Requirements:

1. Participants must be signed up for the Live-Aboard Program.

2. Participants must be at least 11 years old.

3. Participants must read the Space Exploration Merit Badge pamphlet before attending class. The merit badge pamphlet can be purchased from your local council.

4. Participants are encouraged to download the Space Exploration Merit Badge Worksheet to begin work on their own before class.
